คำว่า SCUBA ย่อมาจาก (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) หรือหมายถึงเครื่องมือที่ใช้สำหรับช่วยให้หายใจในขณะอยู่ใต้น้ำเป็นการเฉพาะตัว กล่าวคือสามารถดำลงสู่ใต้น้ำด้วยตนเองได้ ซึ่งแตกต่างจากการดำลงพร้อมๆ กันในเรือดำน้ำเป็นต้น โดยคำว่า Scuba ถูกเรียกใช้ครั้งแรกในปี ค.ศ. 1939 โดยกองทัพเรือสหรัฐฯ ซึ่งเรียกรวมอุปกรณ์ทั้งหมดว่า US military diver's rebreather sets อุปกรณ์หลักที่ใช้ในการดำน้ำคือ ถังบรรจุอากาศแรงดันสูง ท่อสำหรับหายใจ (Regulator) เสื้อแจ๊คเก็จสำหรับดำน้ำโดยเฉพาะ (BCD ย่อมาจาก Buoyancy Control Device) หน้ากาก ตีนกบ เข็มขัดสำหรับใส่ลูกตะกั่ว และลูกตะกั่วเพื่อถ่วงให้จม

Rebreather is a recycling-system equipment reusing exhaust-gas of diver. Circuit respiration-system na krup ! ...Wonderful ! An Exhaust-CO2 is adsorbed by a carbon-dioxide-adsorbent. And divide this to a pure-oxygen again. Its oxygen-density is adjusted by a computer in the Rebreather. This rebreather has two kinds. One is CCR. CCR is a completely closed-circuit system. This equipment don't emit diver's exhaust-gas to in the water. So, this equipment is quiet. and, you can approach to sea-creatures like fish, etc. And, you can dive in the deep sea . The longest diving-time in the world is about 36 hours. Another one is SCR. SCR is a Semi-Closed circuit system. This equipment emits diver's exhaust-gas to in the water different from CCR. But, you can't dive in a depth of more than 5m. Its possible depth is less than 5m.
